Capital Medical Center team members gather ahead of the official raising of the “Donate Life” flag outside the hospital entrance.

April is National Donate Life Month! This month features an entire month of local, regional and national events to celebrate those that have saved and enhanced lives through the gift of donation and to encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors.

As part of the events, Capital Medical Center team members kicked off the month with a “Donate Life” flag-raising ceremony at the hospital main entrance flagpole.

Heidi Schaiberger , LifeNet Health Donor Development Account Manager, led the morning by thanking Capital Medical Center for its efforts to increase organ donation awareness.

“In 2018, five donors provided the gift of tissue donation to save and enhance the lives of hundreds of patients and 12 cornea donors provided the gift of sight to 19 recipients,” Schaiberger noted.

The theme if this year’s National Donate Life Month artwork was inspired by bicycles and the phrase “Life is a Beautiful Ride”.

“Like the donation and transplantation journey, a bicycle serves as a symbol of progress, renewal and the moving circle of life,” Schaiberger said.

“Donation offers many ways to give hope, support and strength to waiting patients, recipients and donor families,” she continued. “We each carry the potential to help make life a beautiful ride for ourselves, and then for others, by registering as a donor, being a caregiver and championing the cause.”

Schaiberger lastly reminded all to take a moment to have the conversation and share your organ donation wishes with your family.

“Special thanks to Capital Medical Center for partnering this month to raise awareness and provide recognition to those who made the selfless decision to give life,” Schaiberger said.
