Cardiopulmonary & Respiratory Care
• Cardiac Rehab
• Accredited by College of American Pathologists

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
Getting into the program begins with a physician referral. A free evaluation is done by a cardiac rehabilitation specialist, usually while the patient is still in the hospital. A program schedule will be set up to participate on an outpatient basis. Al participants must have an electrocardiogram, exercise treadmill test, and blood test. To minimize costs, any of these tests recently performed will not be repeated.
Phase I: While in the hospital, patients are given information on the anatomy of the heart, coronary artery disease, risk factors, pharmaceutical treatments and freedom from smoking.
Phase 2: A 12-week period of exercise begins after discharge from the hospital. Careful cardiac and blood pressure monitoring accompany the exercise sessions. Education will continue with information about diet, energy conservation, stress management, and relaxation.
Phase 3: For as long as they wish, cardiac rehabilitation patients may continue the program by sustaining their exercise workouts under supervised conditions, but without constant cardiac monitoring, for a nominal fee.

Inpatient Units
• Intensive Care, Medical, Surgical & Oncology Units
• Step Down Unit

Step Down Unit
The Step Down Unit (SDU) is an extension of ICU where patients no longer require the intensive level of care provided in the ICU, yet may not be ready for a Medical -Surgical room. Telemetry equipment allows patients continued monitoring by staff.

Intensive Care Unit
Seriously ill patients will go from the Emergency Department directly to CMC's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for intensive/critical care. ICU patients require constant monitoring and care for unstable, life-threatening conditions. Highly trained nurses/staff with specialized equipment monitor and care for patients 24-hours a day.
We realize that fear of the unknown is one of the biggest causes of stress. Please feel free to ask questions about anything you do not understand. If you cannot visit the hospital, the best time to call is between 9:00 am and 9:00 pm Call 360-754-5858, ext. 1353.

Visitation for the ICU & SDU - Visiting hours are flexible, depending upon the patient's needs and or physician's orders. Patients in the ICU may require frequent or long periods of uninterrupted rest to help with their recovery. Only immediate family members and caregivers are allowed into ICU and no more than two visitors at a time. Children under 14 are not permitted without the nurse’s knowledge and approval.
The first 24 hours after admission are critical for the patient's rest and medical evaluation. Therefore, we suggest visiting during the even hours from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm for short periods. Please understand if the nurses suggest minimizing visitors or the length of visitation.
When you visit, please go to the ICU waiting room. Dial extension 1353 and tell the nurse who you want to visit. As soon as it is appropriate, the nurse will allow you to visit the patient. Please understand, if permission is temporarily denied, it is because we have the patient's best interests in mind.

Family Contact Person
We ask each family to designate one contact person who can keep the others apprised of the patient's condition. This enables the nurse to spend more time with the patient.

Calling the Patient
The nurse in charge decides if a patient can accept personal calls, according to the patient's medical condition and/or physician's orders. All calls are routed through the ICU nursing station at 360-754-5858 ext. 1353.

Personal Items and Gifts
On your first visit, please take the patient's valuables, clothes and any personal equipment home with you. Of course, personal toiletries, dentures, slippers and glasses should remain. Due to the limited space in our rooms, we ask that you bring small plants/flower and/or gifts into ICU.

Physician Visits
Most physicians check on patient's each morning. If you would like to speak personally to the attending physician, notify the patient's nurse and they will let the physician know of your request.

Healthy Heart Cardiac Services
Diagnostic & Intervention Services
• Cardiac Stent Technique
Among innovations, cardiologists and interventional radiologists have pioneered "stent" technology. A stent is a metal, spring-like cylindrical device that's placed into narrowed arteries to keep them open. This has been a boon to patients with arteriosclerosis, a disease that causes severe narrowing of arteries, resulting in debilitating symptoms or even limb amputation.

• Coronary Arteriogram
Cardiologists can see the structure and condition of the patient's coronary arteries and recommend appropriate treatment.

• Echocardiography
Ultrasound creates images of the heart and its internal structures through the use of sound waves and computer technology.

• Electrocardiogram (EKG)
An EKG records electrical activity through electrodes placed from the heart on the patient's skin.

• Emergency Treatment
If you experience a sudden onset of chest pressure, "indigestion," or trouble catching your breath, CMC encourages you to call 911 and not delay treatment. CMC's Emergency Department is staffed 24 hours a day by Board-certified emergency room physicians and nurses trained in emergency care. Thurston County Medic One paramedics use Physio Control Life Pak 11 monitor/defibrillators to provide a hospital-quality electrocardiogram (EKG) in the patient's home or the medic van. Diagnostic quality, computer-interpreted 12-lead EKGs can be transmitted over phone lines to the CMC Emergency Department where the emergency physician and cardiologist begin diagnosing and treating the patient before arrival at the hospital.

• Pacemaker
Pacemakers are utilized to assist the heart when its natural electrical signals require assistance. The electrical signals tell the individual sections of the heart when to contract and when to expand. Pacemakers can be implanted on a temporary or permanent basis.

• Peripheral Stent Technique
A tubular wire mesh device (Stent) is inserted into the artery of an extremity to aid in the prevention of further closure.

Mammography/Breast Cancer Screening
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women. In the state of Washington, the American Cancer Society estimates for 2007, 4090 new cases will be identified. Within this number it is estimated 770 women will die as a result of breast cancer and complications. Early detection and treatment are critical to improving your long-term prognosis. One (1) percent of men will be diagnosis with breast cancer.

Early Detection:
There are three ways to stay active in your breast care:
1) Monthly self-breast examination.
2) See your medical provider annually for a complete physical and breast checkup.
3) Have a Mammogram.

Our Cancer Program includes comprehensive diagnostics and treatment of cancer through:

• Diagnostic Mammography

Birthing Suites/LDR/LDRP
When CMC first introduced the concept of having an all-in-one birthing suite unit, the vision was a composite of what mothers said they wanted. That vision became a reality in October 1990. The private birthing suites have been so popular and well received that we again listened to our moms by expanding our services -- more birthing suites and a larger nursery. In addition, we recently added window seats that provide a sleeping area for dad or a family member. Women’s Services is also equipped with its own operating room for caesarean section deliveries. Now the entire fourth floor is dedicated to Women's Services.
We'd love to show you what our mothers and families appreciate:
• Staying in one place rather than moving from room to room through labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum care.
• Larger, private rooms to accommodate a spouse or support person overnight.
• The friendliness, attentiveness and skill of our nurses and physicians.
• A place for siblings so they can be part of the birthing process with a comfortable waiting room for families and special play area for children.
• The warm cozy atmosphere of home.
